On a monthly basis, retail sales increased 0.3 percent from March to April (seasonally adjusted), and sales were up 4.7 percent from March 2017.From the Census Bureau report:Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for April 2018, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were 7.6 billion, an increase of 0.3 percent from the previous month, and 4.7 percent above April 2017. ... On a monthly basis, retail sales increased 0.3 percent from March to April (seasonally adjusted), and sales were up 4.7 percent from March 2017.

From the Census Bureau report:
Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for April 2018, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $497.6 billion, an increase of 0.3 percent from the previous month, and 4.7 percent above April 2017. ... The February 2018 to March 2018 percent change was revised from up 0.6 percent to up 0.8 percent

Retail sales ex-gasoline were up 0.3% in April.

The second graph shows the year-over-year change in retail sales and food service (ex-gasoline) since 1993.

Retail Sales increased 0.3% in April Retail and Food service sales, ex-gasoline, increased by 4.0% on a YoY basis.

The increase in April was at expectations, and sales in February and March were revised up.
